Is this a Scam? I replied to a job on craigslist..?

as a nurses aide. I was sent an email that I was hired....for this persons mother as a nurses aide. The person that hired me is the son of the lady I would be caring for. This person that hired me after reviewing my resume....is in England. Long story short, I was told the money would be sent before I started the work. The emails between Marion and I went on...as I was very suspicious that this was a scam. The only personal information that was required from me was whom I banked with (not account number.) and my mailing address. I did receive a cheque today..and it had a number for me to call. The person I called was a third party....and apparantly the person who sent the cheque. My Last name was not spelled correctly (but very close). I phoned the number that came with the cheque.......and this person ured my it wasnt a scam. I have to now email the person that hired me. I was also told to deposit the cheque. IS this a scam???? Can they access info on me if I deposit the cheque. Final note...I was told the cheque would be a certain amount..but it was almost a thousand more. What should I do???
